Grammarly / SuperHuman: AI Writing Assistant
Overview
I collaborated with Grammarly learning engineers and Arizona State University faculty to create an AI agent that supplements a summative writing assignment in an undergraduate sustainability course. For this assignment, the AI agent provides both math tutoring and formal writing guidance. I structured the system prompt around the assignment objectives and common student struggles. The AI is designed to approach each student interaction as either a math or a writing tutor, depending on the student’s responses.
Learners
Undergraduate students in a required 200-level quantitative reasoning course.
Problem
Students can complete equations and word problems but struggle to connect broader concepts to real world sustainability scenarios. Their writing often lacks formal grammar and structure, and they struggle to clearly articulate their thoughts.
Outcome
Students will work with an AI assistant to produce a well written reflection that shows a personal connection to a specific course topic and explains how they would apply quantitative reasoning to solve or address a sustainability problem.
Student Experience (Screenshots)
Students chat with an AI assistant in an interactive pane on a Brainstorming page. As their discussion progresses, the AI will capture and organize the student's ideas in the main area of the screen. As the student's reflection develops and all learning outcomes are addressed, the AI moves the content into an Outlining page, and then into a Essay page for final development.
