Proactive and Reactive Behavior

Overview

When providing instructional design consultation for corporate clients, the starting point is often a vaguely defined problem or goal. In this case, the organization’s supervisors stated that they spent excessive time dealing with employee conflicts and complaints about cross-department communication. I helped the department director redefine the issues as specific behavior changes, and we created short training activities using real workplace topics and materials. The sample below is one 2-hour training from a series of over 30 short courses designed to reset this company’s culture.

Learners

Supervisors and staff in a Human Resources department.

Problem

Reactive behavior is a common contributor to miscommunication and conflict, which can impact workplace function and morale.

Outcome

Employees will employ active listening, pause before responding, and intentionally choose a positive communication style in workplace interactions.

Facilitator Guide

Facilitators are provided with a slide presentation and lecture notes. They lead a 2-hour class session with discussion, case studies, role plays, and other hands-on workplace training activities.

Participant Guide

Participants are provided with a guidebook where they can take notes, answer questions, and complete activities during the 2-hour class session.

Materials used with permission.
