Course Design and Development Process
Overview
As a senior instructional designer, I have collaborated with faculty on countless course designs and revisions. A frequent challenge is scaling courses to accommodate hundreds of students per class without additional teaching assistant support. The two posters below show how I implemented a strategic design process to align course assessments to defined learning outcomes. Both online and in-person courses use digital tools and customized rubrics to allow instructors to focus their time and attention on assessment feedback.
Learners
Undergraduate students in large enrollment, asynchronous, online courses.
Problem
Increasing enrollment while reducing teaching assistants. Ensuring students meet course outcomes and reducing opportunities for academic integrity violations.
Outcome
All course outcomes are assessed through a balance of software and instructor’s evaluation: Formative assessments are offset to auto-graded content and peer interaction, and summative assessments are designed to be assessed in under 8 minutes per student per week.
New Course Development (Presentation Poster)
This course was designed for enrollment of up to 1000 students per online course. We used the ADDIE process to guide the development of the content and assessments.
Revision for Large Enrollment (Presentation Poster)
Traditionally, this course was offered in-person and used handwritten homework and class discussion. To transition to a large enrollment online course, we implemented two software solutions that supplement the instructor's grading and feedback.
